"Some people live an entire lifetime wondering if they've made a difference in the world. The Marines don't have that problem." Pres. Ronald Reagan
Montford Point Marines Honored With Congressional Gold Medal
From 1942 to 1949, about 20,000 African-American recruits went through boot camp near Camp Lejeune. Most were shipped off to war in the Pacific theatre.
Almost 70 years later, surviving members each received the Congressional Gold Medal, an honor also bestowed upon George Washington, Ulysses S. Grant, The Tuskegee Airmen, Mother Teresa, Winston Churchill among other recipients.
"You came young, brave and committed to serving your country that did not yet appreciate your contributions, " said U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan (N.C.). "You and all Montford Point Marines forged a new path in our military."
"Today, the Corps is stronger because of your service...Today, America is greater because of your sacrifices," added Sen. Richard Barr (N.C.).
The Marine Corps hosted the surviving Marines with a parade and ceremony honoring the men.
"I've been looking for this for 60 years," said Andrew Miles, 86. "I feel good now. I can go away peacefully."
Hooah!!!
Over A Thousand Firefighters Battling Blazes in Colorado and N. Mexico
As of today, approximately 30,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes and communities in Colorado in Waldo Canyon. Making matters worse, an unrelenting heat wave and windy conditions complicated firefighter efforts in controlling the fires. It's estimated about 350 homes have already burned to the ground.
It's also estimated at least a thousand firefighters are battling the Waldo Canyon blaze, one of many across West. Federal firefighter services reported over half of their resources are now in Colorado. The Air Force sent all eight of their firefighting aircraft.
In addition to Colorado and N. Mexico, firefighters are busy fighting other fires in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana.

Helping Our Homeless Veterans
I've often said there should not be one veteran sleeping on any street in America. Unfortunately, it's estimated 12% of the homeless population are veterans (vets make up 8% of the total population).
The aim of The Veterans Site is to help and assist homeless veterans and their families. Their program help provide food security, transitional housing and other assistance for those in need.
